Encouraging National Unity from Young

Situated in Jalan Ipoh—a famous street within the heart of Kuala Lumpur with a mix of high-end upcoming developments and low-cost flats—is Tadika Murni Raya. The residential area in Jalan Ipoh is a heavily developed area and highly accessible via major highways, thus drawing people from all walks of life. As such, the children here are of different races and ethnicities, exposing them to a diverse environment while they are young. After a warm welcome by the principal of the school, Ms. Natasha Yasmine Yap, she began to describe how the school has started and what inspired her to take on the challenge in the early childhood education line. Prior to opening this preschool, Ms. Natasha was an admin at a kindergarten, where she was able to acquire knowledge necessary for preschool education and programs. She explained how many parents were requesting her to start up a kindergarten due to her pleasant personality and strong character, and that’s where it all started. The kindergarten operated officially in December 2017, and it opened its door to children aged 3+ to 6 years.

Traditional Learning Through Thematic Pedagogy

According to Ms. Natasha, Tadika Murni Raya adopts the traditional thematic pedagogy because she believes that traditional learning can benefit students on the achievement of instructional and nurturant effects. Since thematic learning is a student-focused approach, this contributes to enhancing a wide range of students’ potentials in the learning process, making learning more meaningful and effective. In addition, according to past researches, thematic integrated learning has proved to be reliable, not only in improving the student learning outcomes, but also in student-student and student-teacher interactions. Ms. Natasha explained how thematic learning is employed to foster collaborative activity, strengthening the nurturant effect through a sense of responsibility and cooperation.

Ultimately, this teaching method aims at preparing and building up the foundation for beginners upon entering the Primary School. The main program applies the National Preschool Standard-Based Curriculum Framework, as well as additional overseas programme. As this school is made up of multiracial children, the school utilises three main languages: Bahasa Malaysia, English, and Chinese. Some subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, and Moral, will be taught bilingually. Ms. Natasha explained how children with special needs and disabilities are often marginalised in mainstream schools. There is a rising number of pupils with special needs that are unable to be accommodated in schools due to factors such as off-rolling. Oftentimes, she would be visited by parents of kids with special needs, asking if she would accept their children, to which the principal replied, “Every child belongs.” Fortunately, Tadika Murni Raya is not just another ordinary kindergarten. The school has a team of devoted teachers who are committed to a high-quality inclusive childcare system for all children. Here, each child is cared for in the same thoughtful and respectful way as all other children, all in the attempt to making them feel at home (and loved, of course).

Cultural Awareness Through Play

The team at Tadika Murni Raya understands that for children, the latter’s attitude and identity are developed through experiences in accordance with their social environments and cognitive developmental stages. From these factors, young children will progress through certain stages of racial and cultural awareness, which is vital for all Malaysian population, as Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual country. As such, the children here are encouraged to celebrate the wide range of festivals in Malaysia that reflects its vibrant cultural diversity, thus providing an understanding of the uniqueness and diversity of Malaysian culture. In return, mutual respect and tolerance towards people of different culture, race, and religion can be established.

Upon concluding the interview, Ms. Natasha emphasises on students’ better learning experience in across time, place, and discpline through thematic learning. The children are introduced to wider themes and related concepts that are more closely resembled to how life is experienced in classroom and outside of school. This type of interaction encourages respect and cooperation between the children, therefore, building effective peer learning groups. Apart from implementing a knowledge-rich curriculum in the primary years, Tadika Murni Raya often conducts trips and activities to establish a positive parent-school-children relationship.
