UN Recorded Number of Violations Against Children Reach Highest Level in 30 Years | KiddyNews

A new United Nations report has revealed a record number of serious violations against children in conflict zones worldwide, underscoring the urgent need for stronger child protection measures both globally and at home.

The UN verified 38,558 grave violations against children in armed conflicts during 2025, the highest number recorded since monitoring began 30 years ago.

The findings include children who were killed, injured, recruited by armed groups, abducted, subjected to sexual violence, or affected by attacks on schools and hospitals.

Government Forces Identified as Main Perpetrators

For the first time since the UN began tracking these incidents, government forces were responsible for more violations than non-state armed groups.

Vanessa Frazier, the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, described 2025 as “one of the darkest chapters” for child protection since monitoring started.

She said the findings raise concerns about the erosion of international laws designed to safeguard children during times of conflict.

“When those responsible for protecting children contribute to their suffering, it highlights the need for stronger accountability and renewed commitment to children’s rights,” she said.

Thousands of Children Affected Across Conflict Zones

The highest number of violations was recorded in Israel and the Palestinian territories, where the UN documented 12,445 cases involving children.

Other countries with large numbers of verified violations included the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Myanmar and Somalia.

In Ukraine, the UN recorded 1,899 grave violations against children, including deaths and injuries linked to the ongoing conflict.

The report found that killings and injuries accounted for the largest share of incidents, with child deaths increasing by 34% compared to the previous year and injuries rising by 10%.

A third of all child victims were girls.

Emerging Concerns Over New Technologies

The report also highlighted concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence and remotely operated weapons systems in conflicts.

According to the UN, some drone-enabled attacks were carried out with limited human oversight, contributing to increased risks for children living in conflict-affected areas.

A Reminder of Why Child Protection Matters

While Malaysia is not affected by armed conflict on the scale seen in these regions, the report serves as a reminder that protecting children must remain a priority in all settings.

Child protection extends beyond physical safety and includes safeguarding children’s rights, wellbeing, education and access to supportive environments where they can grow and thrive.

The UN’s findings reinforce the importance of strong laws, accountable institutions and continued efforts to ensure that every child is protected from harm, whether in times of peace or conflict.
