Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has called for stronger laws and sustained political commitment better to protect children’s rights and well-being in Malaysia.

Speaking at the closing of the Symposium on Legal Reform for Children’s Rights in Parliament, Johari said lawmakers have a responsibility to ensure legislation continues to serve the best interests of children to respond to emerging challenges.

Johari highlighted several areas requiring ongoing attention, including child protection, access to education, documentation, digital safety and social inclusion.

He said children must be adequately protected and supported as they grow and develop in an increasingly complex world.

According to Johari, strengthening children’s rights requires more than effective legislation.

He stressed that protecting children cannot rest solely with one ministry or agency, but requires cooperation among federal and state governments, civil society organisations, communities and families.

“Protecting children is a shared responsibility,” he said, adding that meaningful progress depends on strong coordination and political will.
