Small Wonder Malaysia, Indah Prime, offers a compelling choice with outstanding early learning environment and educational experience for little ones. Established in August 2025, it is the brand’s fifth centre in Johor Bahru and its first purposefully designed preschool within a commercial development. Spanning 10,000 sq ft across four storeys and equipped with a lift, the centre is designed for children from three months to six years, giving families a spacious, secure and accessible place to begin their children’s learning journey.
Their vision is to create a preschool where children feel safe, valued and inspired to learn every day, while becoming a trusted partner to parents. For Centre Director Ms. Tein Jia Huan, this means looking beyond what children can achieve academically and recognising who they are becoming.
Learning that Begins with Wonder
Small Wonder’s philosophy is grounded in respect for every child as an individual. Rather than expecting all children to learn in the same way, the centre seeks to nurture their distinct strengths, interests and potential. Its programme combines inquiry-based learning with purposeful play, giving children opportunities to explore, ask questions, investigate ideas and build confidence through meaningful experiences.
This child-centred approach is supported by Small Wonder’s Global Curriculum Frameworks, which integrate Malaysia’s Kurikulum Prasekolah 2026 (KP2026), Singapore’s National Early Childhood Education Curriculum Framework (NEL) and the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Together, these frameworks provide a holistic foundation for children’s intellectual, emotional, social and physical development.
Language and literacy form an important part of this foundation. The preschool’s core curriculum provides meaningful learning experiences in English, Chinese and Bahasa Melayu, nurturing children’s communication and early literacy skills. The Cambridge Phonics Programme develops early reading through systematic phonics, while the Cambridge Reader Workshop helps children build reading fluency and comprehension while cultivating a genuine love for books.
For preschoolers aged four to six, learning takes on a cognitive and constructivist approach, connecting new knowledge to children’s everyday experiences. Project-Based Learning (PBL), with its thematic and inquiry-based approach, encourages children to investigate ideas, ask questions and develop a genuine sense of wonder. Experiential Chinese, supported by Mandarin specialists, further strengthens language development through immersive experiences.
For younger children, the Early Years programme focuses on communication and language, physical development, and personal and social growth through experiences such as Circle Time, Montessori education, Body Works and Music Works. Across these programmes, children are given opportunities to learn through active participation, discovery and meaningful interactions rather than simply receiving information.
Preparing Children for What Comes Next
Small Wonder’s learning approach is closely aligned with Malaysia’s evolving KP2026 framework, with greater emphasis on holistic development. Children learn through play, inquiry, projects, hands-on exploration, and meaningful conversations. There’s no immense reliance on worksheets and memorisation.
These experiences help children develop communication, creativity, problem-solving and collaboration, alongside resilience, independence and adaptability. This is especially relevant as some families consider the optional early entry route into Standard 1 at age six. Ms. Tein emphasises that readiness should come before age.
Where early entry is being considered, the centre works with parents to assess developmental readiness and provide additional support in literacy, numeracy, communication, problem-solving, independence and self-management. Just as importantly, children need emotional resilience, confidence, curiosity and the ability to adapt to unfamiliar environments.
Educators Who Put Children First
Quality learning depends on the people guiding it. Small Wonder looks for educators who are qualified but also patient, empathetic, communicative, passionate about working with children and committed to continuous learning. Professional and safeguarding standards are treated seriously.
Through Busy Bees’ continuous learning programmes, educators receive ongoing professional development in areas including child development, curriculum implementation, positive guidance, health and safety, first aid, safeguarding and classroom management. As Ms. Tein puts it, “When we invest in our educators, our children benefit directly.”
The centre’s purpose-built environment reinforces this child-centred philosophy. Child-sized furnishings and accessible learning materials are designed around young children’s needs, while bright, spacious classrooms encourage creativity, curiosity and engagement. One of its standout features is an indoor wall-climbing structure, offering movement-based exploration and physical challenge in place of a conventional playground.
Safety, Wellbeing and Everyday Care
A nurturing preschool must also be a safe one. Small Wonder Indah Prime does daily health screenings, strict hygiene and sanitisation routines, regular classroom disinfection, emergency drills, and secure arrival and dismissal procedures. Educators also undergo continuous safeguarding training.
Food is another part of the centre’s care. Meals are freshly prepared in-house by trained kitchen staff, allowing closer monitoring of food quality, nutrition, hygiene and individual dietary requirements, including allergies and special dietary needs.
Partnership with Parents
Children thrive when school and home work together. Parents are kept informed through weekly updates, progress reports, parent-teacher conferences, learning portfolios and digital communication platforms. Regular conversations are encouraged so educators and families can share observations and respond to each child’s changing needs.
Parents are also invited into the life of the centre through community events, Parents’ Day activities such as the Bee Fit Fun Run, festive celebrations, learning showcases, graduations and educational outings. These occasions turn learning into shared experiences and help build stronger connections between children, educators and families.
Success Beyond Academic Results
Ultimately, Small Wonder measures success by more than grades or academic milestones. Ms. Tein describes a successful child as one who is kind, confident, resilient, respectful and curious about the world.
“We want our children to feel comfortable asking questions, trying new things, learning from mistakes, and treating others with empathy,” she says. If children leave Small Wonder with a love for learning and confidence in who they are, the centre believes it has fulfilled its purpose.
That philosophy also reflects Ms. Tein’s hopes for Malaysian early childhood education: continued investment in teacher development, high-quality learning environments and stronger collaboration between schools and families.
Moving Forward with Wonders
Looking ahead, Small Wonder Indah Prime plans to keep investing in educators, enriching learning experiences, strengthening parent partnerships and maintaining high standards of health, safety and safeguarding. Its ambition is simple but meaningful: for every child to leave happy, confident and excited to learn, prepared not only for primary school, but for life.
For parents seeking a purpose-built preschool where global perspectives meet a child-centred Malaysian context, Small Wonder Malaysia, Indah Prime invites families to discover the environment, meet its educators and see how learning can spark a lifelong sense of wonder and discover a place where curiosity, confidence and character grow together each day.
