Quality Early Childhood Educators Key To Supporting Every Child, Says Fadhlina | KiddyNews

Malaysia needs better-prepared early childhood educators to ensure young children receive strong support during their formative years, particularly those with different developmental and learning needs, said Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek.

She said early childhood education plays an important role in shaping children’s cognitive, social and emotional development, making educator quality an important part of the sector.

“Early childhood education is not merely preparation before entering Year 1. These early years are among the most important stages in a child’s growth and exploration of the world,” she said.

Fadhlina was speaking at the launch of three new early childhood education programmes at Sunway University.

Preparing Educators For Diverse Needs

The programmes include a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education with Special Needs (Honours), a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education through Open and Distance Learning.

The programmes place emphasis on inclusive education and preparing educators to respond to children with diverse developmental and learning needs.

Fadhlina said the best start for children depends on ensuring that those educating them are properly prepared for the responsibilities of early childhood education.

Beyond Preparing Children For School

Professor Malissa Maria Mahmud, Dean of Sunway University’s School of Education, said early childhood educators have responsibilities that extend beyond teaching basic skills.

Educators need to understand how children learn, develop and interact with the world, while creating environments where every child feels supported, included and able to participate meaningfully.

She said investing in educators could improve the quality of experiences children receive during their formative years, particularly by supporting more inclusive learning environments.

Building Strong Foundations

The focus on educator preparation reflects the broader role of early childhood education in children’s development.

Rather than viewing the early years simply as preparation for Year 1, the speakers highlighted the importance of giving children opportunities to learn, explore and develop with appropriate support from well-prepared educators.

For young children, quality early education therefore depends not only on what they learn, but also on the adults who understand their individual needs and help them participate confidently in the learning environment.
