Sixteen-year-old Ruplynn Kaur (pictured above) has been appointed president of the Petaling Jaya Child Council for the 2026–2027 term, giving young people a formal platform to share their views on issues affecting children in the city.
A student at SMK (P) Sri Aman, Ruplynn will lead the youth advisory body under the Petaling Jaya City Council, representing children’s perspectives in local governance.
Advocating for Children’s Well-Being
Ruplynn said she hopes to focus on promoting children’s health, well-being and inclusivity during her term.
“I intend to promote good health and wellbeing among children, as well as protection and inclusivity for all children in Petaling Jaya,” she said.
Her appointment places her among 30 students selected to serve on the council, which provides a channel for young residents to contribute ideas and feedback to city leaders.
Inspired by Child-Friendly City Initiative
Ruplynn’s interest in the programme grew after attending a workshop linked to the Petaling Jaya Child Friendly City initiative, a collaboration between the city council and non-governmental organisations to strengthen child participation in urban development.
After applying, she went through several stages of interviews, including group-based and practical assessments, before being selected for the leadership role.
She said her motivation to join the council was driven by a strong interest in child welfare and children’s rights, as well as the global goals championed by UNICEF.
Youth Leadership Beyond the Council
In addition to her new responsibilities, Ruplynn is actively involved in school leadership. She serves as a prefect and participates in her school’s youth leadership summit and young entrepreneur club.
Giving Children a Voice in the City
The Petaling Jaya Child Council allows young people under 18 who live or study in the city to serve as volunteer child councillors for a two-year term. The initiative aims to ensure that children’s perspectives are considered in policies and programmes affecting their daily lives.
For Petaling Jaya, the programme reflects a growing effort to involve young voices in shaping a city that is safer, healthier and more inclusive for children.
