Choosing a kindergarten is one of the most important decisions a parent makes. It isn’t just about academics, it’s about values, character, confidence, and creating a joyful love for learning that will carry children far into the future.
Morning Star Kindergarten, Kepong has been dedicated to this mission since 2005. With the guiding philosophy of “Transcending Boundaries,” the school prepares children aged 3 to 6 to become resilient, curious, and confident learners in an ever-changing world.
A Vision Rooted in Passion
The story of Morning Star begins with its founder, Ms. Tan Peik Chin, a graduate of the Department of Education at National Taiwan Normal University. With teaching experience spanning Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore—including nearly a decade as a college lecturer, Ms. Tan came to a life-changing realisation:
“When teaching older students, I found it incredibly difficult to change their ways of thinking. This made me believe that we should start shaping children’s values and thinking patterns when they are still pure and impressionable like a blank canvas.”
From that conviction, Morning Star Kindergarten was born, a place where children’s minds and hearts are nurtured with care, creativity, and strong foundations for life.
A Holistic, Theme-Based Curriculum
Morning Star’s thematic learning approach is what sets it apart. Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, lessons are interconnected across languages, science, mathematics, arts, and physical education. A simple theme such as “The Human Body” becomes a multi-sensory adventure; children read books, explore images, conduct experiments, and even participate in taste-testing activities to understand senses.
This cross-curricular method ensures knowledge isn’t memorised, it is experienced. Children leave each class not only smarter, but also more curious about the world around them.
STEAM Education in Action
Long before STEAM became a popular buzzword, Morning Star was already leading the way. Through experiments, hands-on projects, and exploration, children learn to problem-solve creatively.
Ms. Tan shares a memorable classroom story:
“In a theme on natural disasters, our six-year-olds simulated a volcanic eruption using baking soda and vinegar. They researched weather changes at home, and some even returned with their own findings about tornadoes. When children are genuinely interested in a topic, learning becomes joyful and natural.”
This experiential approach not only sparks curiosity but also develops the very skills technology cannot replace; critical thinking, imagination, and judgment.
Immersive Trilingual Education
In multicultural Malaysia, mastering English, Mandarin, and Malay is a valuable asset. At Morning Star, children grow in a fully immersive trilingual environment where each language is taught naturally in context. By age six, most children can confidently communicate in all three languages—an achievement that gives them a head start in school and beyond.
To strengthen literacy, Morning Star employs proven techniques such as flashcards, which boost memory and recognition. This ensures children transition to primary school with confidence, fluency, and enthusiasm for language learning.
Fostering Independence and Confidence
For the youngest learners, independence is nurtured through Montessori-inspired activities that enhance hand-eye coordination, observation, and concentration. Sand play, sensory toys, and tactile exercises are more than just fun—they develop focus and motor skills essential for growth.
Confidence, too, is built step by step. Children begin with circle time, progress to show-and-tell, and eventually perform on stage. This gradual journey helps them feel safe, supported, and ready to shine in front of others.
To further cultivate independence, Morning Star believes children learn best when they connect theory to real life. That’s why learning often takes place outside the classroom:
A theme called “I Am a Zookeeper” leads children to the National Zoo, where they observe animals up close and learn about a zookeeper’s responsibilities.
Practical life lessons, such as shopping trips, teach budgeting, weighing items, and paying at the counter—making math meaningful and fun.
These experiences spark excitement and nurture life skills that last well beyond kindergarten years.
Technology that Enriches Learning
Every classroom is equipped with multimedia tools that transform abstract topics into vivid experiences. For instance, phonics lessons are enhanced with interactive programs that combine sound and visuals, while a science video on seahorses showcases the wonder of life in ways that children never forget.
By blending traditional teaching with digital tools, Morning Star ensures learning is engaging and relevant for the 21st century.
A Safe, Hygienic, and Caring Environment
Parents can rest assured knowing their children are cared for in a safe, hygienic setting. Health checks, sanitised classrooms, freshly prepared meals, CCTV surveillance, and controlled pick-up procedures ensure the highest safety standards.
Ms. Tan emphasises, “Since our founding, we have strictly adhered to health protocols. Hygiene and safety are non-negotiable, because children learn best when parents feel secure.”
Enriched Full-Day Programme
For families seeking a wholesome, balanced routine, Morning Star offers a full-day programme that includes storytelling, handicrafts, Chinese poetry, and science experiments. Afternoon sessions focus on homework guidance, with trilingual teachers giving one-on-one support to help children overcome language weaknesses.
With breaks and light activities woven throughout, the programme ensures children learn happily without stress.
Partnership with Parents
Morning Star views education as a collaborative journey. Parents are kept closely informed with regular updates and meetings, especially during the early adjustment phase. This strong partnership ensures children are supported both at school and at home, giving them consistency in values and habits.
A Place Where Children Shine
By transcending traditional boundaries of education, the kindergarten raises children who are not only academically capable but also emotionally resilient, socially confident, and ready to thrive in the ever-changing world. It definitely is a nurturing community that is healthy for your child’s growth. Parents, try out Morning Star Kindergarten at Kepong, a place that blends vision, heart, and proven excellence.
