The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced several curriculum intervention initiatives to bolster basic literacy and numeracy skills amongst primary students as well as better align content within the existing curriculum, to ensure it stays relevant and up to date with the needs of students.
In a special press conference, Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek said the measures are in response to concerns raised by various stakeholders–including parents and teachers–on issues such as the high level of the current curriculum and the content being inappropriate for students’ ages. Highlights include:
Literacy and numeracy screening
A literacy and numeracy intervention programme will be introduced for Primary 1 pupils in the 2024/25 academic session. The screening process will span three months.
Within this period, pupils who are observed to be lacking in 3M skills (reading, writing, and counting) will be placed under the intervention programme for three months starting July. Once pupils have reached the expected proficiency within this period, they will return to their original classes.
The KSSR (2017) Edition 3 Alignment Document, or Dokumen Penjajaran KSSR (Semakan 2017) Edisi 3
The recently released KSSR (2017) Edition 3 Alignment Document offers updated and reorganised content for Mathematics and Science for Tahap Satu pupils, namely those in primary 1 to 3.
The document provides teachers with guidelines on curriculum delivery, and can be used in tandem with MOE’s latest Modul Bimbingan (MOBIM) for Maths and Science. Teachers will undergo training and will be provided with supplementary materials to ensure effective implementation.
It is not a new curriculum, so parents need not worry about buying new books. Documents for Bahasa Malaysia and English subjects will be released in due course.
Change in format for UASA reports
The Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik (UASA) examination results for all subjects will be presented in a percentage and grade structure instead of the current Tahap Penguasaan (mastery level) format, making it easier for parents to evaluate their child’s progress. Parents will also be able to access the reports online through MOE’s integrated assessment management system (Sistem Pengurusan Pentaksiran Bersepadu - SPPB).
Fadhlina stresses that the MOE is taking a forward-looking approach with these measures, in preparation for the implementation of the 2027 school curriculum, which emphasises mastery of literacy, numeracy, and character development.
