The Ministry of Education (MOE) has filled 99.8% of its preschool teacher positions, with 10,478 teachers deployed nationwide as of 1 July. The announcement reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen early childhood education and meet growing demand for preschool places across Malaysia.
Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh shared the update during a Dewan Rakyat session, noting that the ministry continues to expand both its workforce and preschool capacity.
More Teachers to Support Growing Enrolment
Between 2023 and 2025, the MOE recruited and deployed 1,202 new preschool teachers. Wong said additional recruitment will continue in phases based on projected enrolment growth in different parts of the country.
To ensure high-quality teaching, the ministry has also enhanced pre-service, in-service and continuous professional training programmes so that preschool educators possess the qualifications and competencies required for early childhood education.
These training initiatives aim to support quality teaching and learning across all government preschools.
Over 10,000 Preschool Classes Currently Operating
As of 31 May, the MOE was operating 10,491 preschool classes nationwide, serving 217,026 children.
The ministry said decisions on where to open or expand preschool classes are based on careful assessments of local demand and the number of eligible children within each community.
300 More Preschool Classes Planned Next Year
Looking ahead, the MOE plans to open another 300 preschool classes in 2027 as part of its long-term expansion strategy.
This will contribute towards the ministry’s target of establishing 1,040 new preschool classes over a five-year period, increasing access to quality early childhood education for children across the country.
Expanding Access for Every Child
Wong added that the ministry remains committed to ensuring more children have the opportunity to attend preschool, particularly six-year-olds who have yet to enrol.
Alongside expanding preschool classes, the MOE will continue working closely with State Education Departments, the Community Development Department (KEMAS) and other relevant agencies to improve preschool access nationwide.
The continued expansion reflects Malaysia’s broader commitment to strengthening early childhood education and giving more children a strong foundation before they begin primary school.
