KELA (KizSports Early Learning Academy) Preschool, Desa Parkcity is located in Plaza Arkadia, a charmingly modern spot within the contemporary township. It is a one-stop child development centre managed by operators Nasyrah Mohd Azhar and Jasmine Syed Mohamed.
Originally named Kizsports & Gym, the centre has since been rebranded as KELA (KizSports Early Learning Academy) Preschool. It has been standing strong for 13 years, having moved from The Waterfront to its current location just a few years ago. The new brand represents the team's reinvigorated commitment to delivering quality, holistic, and fun education to your children.
This early childhood centre offers a full day programme; it all depends on what you are looking for. From a quality early learning academy to a range of superb enrichment classes, this centre offers everything under one roof.
Kids from as young as 24 months to 6 years old are able to attend the Early Learning Academy, KELA’s preschool programme that advocates for play-based and experiential learning. Children here are placed into groups according to age, where classes have a standard ratio of 1 teacher to 8 students.
The curriculum is organized around real-life themes, so as to be relevant and interesting to kids.
In this programme, kids have boundless fun while making sense of concepts through practical lessons—such as having a thrilling scooter race, to learn about speed and inclines!
Many of the academy’s activities are highly sensorial-based, staying far from one-dimensional teaching. For example, teachers don’t just show kids pictures of fruits during a lesson. The class will actually go to the supermarket together.
When it comes to making decisions for their learning programme, Nasyrah and Jasmine are quick to ask:
How will this benefit the kids?
The duo who run the Desa ParkCity branch are close friends and mothers, who truly understand and emphasize the importance of kids’ holistic development.
This is why they stress growth in areas outside of academics, such as self-expression and communication.
Still, it doesn’t mean that children aren’t well prepared for primary school. The syllabus actually goes above and beyond requirements for the basic national preschool curriculum.
When it comes to children who have special educational needs, Nasyrah and Jasmine invite parents to discuss intentions and goals they have for their kids. This is to see if the preschool would be a good match for them. Students are then taken in on a case-by-case basis, after a trial period.
“We have to be fair to everyone and follow our conscience. For any child who joins us, we want them to gain something from being here,” says Jasmine
“We’re friends with parents!” Jasmine says without hesitation, when asked about the parent-school relationship. “We are very open, it’s just the nature of who we are.”
Everyone from the administrator to the caretaker here is friendly, and loves kids. Children here are encouraged to explore the entire learning space and to feel like it’s a familiar second home for them.
Although there’s lots of fun and warmth to be shared—make no mistake; the quality of teaching is never overlooked. Teachers here are trained and qualified.
Furthermore, the teachers love working at this Kizsports branch. Nasyrah explains, “We’re very proud to say our turnover of teachers is very low. We have many teachers who have been with us from the very beginning.”
In addition to the main syllabus, KELA Preschool Desa ParkCity has a number of extracurricular activities. Annually, either a sports event or concert will be held.
Every term will also have a field trip and a unique theme week, while every school week has a syllabus enhancement activity (where teachers come up with new ways to teach concepts).
The theme week used to only last a day per term, but it became so popular that they extended it to a week. ‘Book Week’, for example, will have kids doing a different theme-related activity every day, such as dressing up as their favourite book characters or playing a game based on a book they love.
Besides this, there’s an initiative known as ‘I Know I Can’, which aims to develop self-confidence in kids when talking, singing, or performing in front of a crowd. Its implementation has seen success, as many students now rush (uninitiated) to volunteer for speeches and performances.
A wide variety of premier enrichment classes, conducted by outside specialists, are available at this one-stop child development centre. Options range from martial arts, yoga, arts and crafts, science, to gymnastics.
This centre chooses only the best in the industry and doesn’t compromise on quality. For example, Master Michael, who teaches their taekwondo class, is one of the coaches for the national team.
“On Saturdays we have many parents leaving their kids here from morning to evening, to participate in our classes back-to-back,” shares Nasyrah.
KELA Preschool Desa ParkCity is open 6 days a week.
