Early intervention can transform the future of a child with special needs, and GrowIn Sprouts stands as its beacon of hope and innovation. Established in 2018, this specialised centre is redefining what it means to provide inclusive, holistic support for neurodiverse children. Located strategically in a serene bungalow opposite University Malaya Hospital, GrowIn Sprouts is more than just a therapy centre – it’s a community of care, learning, and empowerment for children and their families.
The Story Behind GrowIn Sprouts
Every great initiative starts with a personal story. For Mr. Wee Kim Leng, founder of GrowIn Sprouts, the journey began when his son was diagnosed with autism at three and a half years old. “Back then, it was almost impossible to find the right centre. Every new place we approached charged for separate screening assessments, and most required long waiting lists,” recalls Mr. Wee. “When Sprouts Kids – where my son was receiving therapy – announced its closure, I felt compelled to step in. That’s how GrowIn Sprouts was born.”
From this deeply personal experience, GrowIn Sprouts emerged as a one-stop, multidisciplinary centre dedicated to early intervention and therapy for children with special needs. Today, the centre provides an integrated solution under one roof, making life easier for families navigating the complexities of autism and developmental delays.
What Makes GrowIn Sprouts Unique?
The greatest differentiator for GrowIn Sprouts is its comprehensive, all-in-one model. Many therapy centres offer early intervention programmes, but families often find themselves shuttling between locations for speech therapy, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy. GrowIn Sprouts eliminates this stress by offering everything in one place:
Occupational Therapy (focused on motor skills, sensory integration)
Physiotherapy
Hydrotherapy
Clinical Psychology and Developmental Assessments
“Our centre brings together all the essential therapies under one roof,” explains Mr. Wee. “We were among the first in Malaysia to include speech and occupational therapy as part of the early intervention programme – delivered by qualified therapists, not teachers. That level of quality sets us apart.”
Besides conveniences, this holistic approach ensures consistency and collaboration among specialists, resulting in better outcomes for every child.
Designed for Growth: A Space Tailored to Children’s Needs
Step into GrowIn Sprouts, and you’ll notice that every detail is thoughtfully designed for sensory, emotional, and developmental support. The centre’s occupational therapy room looks more like an adventure playground – complete with rock climbing walls, monkey bars, flying fox, swings, and a ball pit – all aimed at strengthening gross and fine motor skills. The speech therapy rooms are equipped with specialised Talk Tools for articulation and oral-motor development.
What truly sets the space apart is the sensory garden, where children engage with nature, planting and caring for herbs with their parents. “Research shows that nature-based activities accelerate growth and adaptability,” says Mr. Wee. “That’s why we moved to a bungalow – children need grass under their feet, fresh air, and real-world sensory experiences.”
Walls in therapy rooms are painted in neutral tones to minimise distractions, while EIP rooms feature soft padding for safety. Every element serves a purpose: to create a calm yet stimulating environment where children can thrive.
Outstanding Outcomes: The Numbers Speak
GrowIn Sprouts takes pride in measurable success. According to Mr. Wee, 70% of children who complete the programme transition to typical schools within one to two years. “That’s a huge achievement,” he notes. “Our goal has always been to help children integrate into mainstream education wherever possible.”
For those who require a different path, the centre guides families toward homeschooling or alternative education options. In fact, Mr. Wee launched BRIGHTFuture International Academy, a sister initiative, to support children who cannot adapt to typical school settings but can still learn in structured environments.
Empowering Parents and Building Awareness
Raising a child with special needs can feel overwhelming, and GrowIn Sprouts recognises that parents need as much support as their children. The centre conducts quarterly Individualised Education Plan (IEP) reviews, offers parent training sessions, and provides access to psychological counselling for emotional well-being.
“Acceptance is the biggest hurdle,” shares Mr. Wee candidly. “Many parents initially struggle to acknowledge their child’s condition. I’ve been in their shoes, and that experience helps me guide them with empathy.”
Beyond the centre’s walls, GrowIn Sprouts is an active advocate for autism awareness. They’ve collaborated with PDRM for a fun walk in conjunction with Autism Awareness Month. Furthermore, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Faculty of Dentistry, University Malaya for student training, and are planning a regional autism awareness campaign in the coming year. These initiatives aim to combat stigma and educate society on neurodiversity.
A Vision for an Inclusive Future
Mr. Wee’s mission goes far beyond running a centre. “My dream is to create a fully inclusive society in Malaysia – a place where neurodiverse individuals can live, work, and be accepted without judgment,” he says. GrowIn Sprouts is also expanding to underserved regions such as Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Malacca, with plans for an international branch in Hyderabad, India.
