Enhanced Approach to Early Childhood Education

Malaysia’s newly introduced preschool curriculum will centre on six major learning areas designed to support holistic growth in young children, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced.

The updated early childhood programme, which begins in 2026, aims to help children develop in multiple dimensions, including emotional, physical, cognitive, creative and moral domains. Fadhlina said the areas were selected to strengthen fundamental skills and nurture balanced, well-rounded learners from an early age.

Six Key Areas Shaping Preschool Learning

According to Fadhlina, the preschool curriculum will emphasise:

  • Socio-Emotional Development: Helping children recognise and manage emotions while building positive relationships with others and their environment.
  • Physical Development & Wellbeing: Focusing on health awareness, good nutrition, hygiene and safety. It also incorporates reproductive and social health education (PEERS).
  • Language and Literacy: Strengthening communication skills and encouraging an early interest in reading and language.
  • Spirituality, Values and Citizenship: Teaching basic religious knowledge, moral values, patriotism, and a sense of responsibility to family and community.
  • Creativity and Aesthetics: Allowing children to explore their imagination through art, music, movement and drama.
  • Cognitive Development: Encouraging curiosity, systematic thinking, information sharing and problem-solving skills.

Fadhlina said these interconnected areas will help produce learners who are well-balanced, grounded in moral values and ready to compete in a global environment.

Why This Matters for Parents and Children

The new preschool curriculum marks a significant step in early childhood education by placing equal importance on emotional, social and physical development, not just basic academic skills. This approach supports children in becoming:

  • Confident Communicators: Through language and literacy activities that build confidence in expressing ideas and asking questions.
  • Emotionally Aware: By learning to understand and manage feelings — a key skill for school readiness and social interaction.
  • Creative Thinkers: With opportunities to explore arts, play and imagination, fostering a lifelong love for learning.
  • Civic-Minded Individuals: Through early exposure to values, respect, and belonging to family and community.

For parents, the curriculum provides a structured framework for early education that aligns with developmental milestones, making it easier to understand how children learn, grow, and prepare for formal schooling. This builds a stronger foundation for future education.
