An education expert has proposed the introduction of a standardised curriculum for all kindergartens in Malaysia to ensure children receive more equal and consistent early childhood education experiences.
Mariani Nor, the acting vice-chancellor of Segi University, presented the proposal as part of seven resolutions during the Bumiputera Education Congress held in Kuala Lumpur.
Concerns Over Differences in Preschool Systems
Speaking during a panel discussion on empowering preschool education, Mariani highlighted that Malaysia currently has multiple categories of government preschools and private kindergartens operating under different curricula.
She noted that despite extensive discussions during the development of the national preschool curriculum, inconsistencies still exist across the sector.
Mariani questioned why preschool education continues to be divided into different systems and called for greater standardisation to reduce disparities in learning quality.
Raising the Status of Preschool Teachers
Mariani also urged the government to elevate the professional status of preschool teachers, placing greater recognition on early childhood educators.
She pointed to international education systems in which teaching is regarded as a highly respected profession, with opportunities for advanced qualifications up to the doctoral level.
Her proposal reflects growing discussions about the important role preschool educators play in children’s foundational development and learning experiences.
Strengthening Support for Children with Additional Needs
Among the other resolutions presented was the need to strengthen parental support systems, particularly for children requiring additional attention or developmental support.
Mariani stressed the importance of improving early intervention systems so children with developmental challenges can be identified and supported at an earlier stage.
She said early identification would allow children to receive guidance and opportunities comparable to their peers.
Technology and Inclusive Learning also Highlighted
The proposals also included calls for more integrated education through the use of information technology, alongside the creation of inclusive and high-quality learning environments for young children.
The recommendations reflect wider efforts to improve Malaysia’s early childhood education sector as policymakers and educators place increasing focus on school readiness, inclusivity and equitable access to quality preschool learning.
