Discover International School, Seri Kembangan is driven by a vision to “inspire every child with a love of learning, the confidence to explore and growth to achieve as an individual.” Founded by Dr. Danny Ghee, winner of the EDUCOOP National Outstanding Educator Award 2019, the school strives to be a leading international school where all children have equal access to good quality education regardless of social background, and one that’s recognised for its commitments to excellence.
The school’s campus is located in Bayan Club, a recreational centre with excellent sporting facilities. Students get to enjoy all the amenities including a swimming pool, badminton court, tennis court and gym. Parents can rest assured that children will be safe as every level is overseen by a guard, as well as CCTV surveillance systems. Within the school are well-equipped learning environments that are carefully designed to facilitate modern-day learning needs. The setup presents many opportunities for students to explore new concepts, while nurturing their personal interests.
At Discover International School, they offer a solid, well-rounded curriculum that’s based on the British education system, but designed to be locally appropriate. The comprehensive framework combines both academic and skills-driven learning to support students holistically. It sets a strong foundation for physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual development, and prepares students for everything to come in their lives.
From the age of 3 years onwards, students who enrol in Discover International School will progress seamlessly from preparatory (preschool) to secondary. Each stage builds on the students’ knowledge from the previous one, and the educational experience will be nothing short of exceptional.
For its youngest learners, the focus is to ensure children feel happy and secure, with their needs cared for above all else. Once they feel safe, they will naturally be ready to explore and progress at their own pace. Teachers balance play-based learning with the teaching of fundamental concepts such as literacy, numeracy, language, music, art and social-emotional skills. They actively provide a wide variety of multi-sensory opportunities for children to experiment with different things and discover their inner potential. They want children to never lose their curiosity to learn something new.
Children pick up more than just the basic building blocks for a smooth transition to primary school, they develop skills in all the main domains of learning: personal, social and emotional development; physical development; communication and language development; literacy development; mathematics; understanding of the world; and expressive arts and design.
At the primary stage, teachers continue to maintain a fun and active approach to learning. Lessons are taught in small groups, with a maximum of 12 students per class, in order for students to receive the personalised attention they need to optimise development. The school’s diverse co-curricular programme utilises both classroom and outdoor educational opportunities to produce beyond outstanding academic results. Throughout, students will be encouraged to think creatively, communicate effectively, collaborate effectively with peers, and remain inspired to learn enthusiastically. There is a strong emphasis to prepare students to be competent global citizens with 21st century skills. As students progress through the primary years, they will grow to become increasingly confident in their own abilities to take on new challenges in secondary school.
The culture in the lower and upper secondary levels remains the same, where students are supported to develop skills and competencies for the betterment of themselves. Students find their interests through a child-centred programme that’s filled with authentic, real-world learning experiences. Upper secondary students will have to make a choice for their preferred subjects, which are all geared towards the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination in their final year.
In 2022, its Year 11 student, Nathan Lye, received the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award (Top in the World) Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, which is a testament to the school’s ability to foster students with strong academic credentials.
When Discover graduates leave school, they are armed with globally-recognised IGCSE qualifications, which opens the opportunity towards entry to colleges and universities worldwide. They are also equipped with a strong set of transferable skills that will last them a lifetime, preparing them for the future.
Above all, everyone at Discover International School embraces the value of positive relationships. Students are motivated to form respectful relationships with their peers, teachers and the whole school community. Teachers also put in their utmost effort to build a genuine bond with parents, understanding their home environments and welcoming regular, open communication. This makes a remarkable impact on the success of its students, early on.
