Brunei To Establish National Early Childhood Intervention Centre In 2027 | KiddyNews

Brunei will establish a National Intervention Centre for Early Childhood Education (NICEe) in 2027 to provide early educational intervention for children aged two to four.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah announced the initiative during the country’s 36th National Teachers’ Day celebration at the International Convention Centre in Berakas, highlighting the importance of early intervention and inclusive education in giving every child an equal opportunity to develop.

Four Ministries to Lead Centre

NICEe will be jointly led by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Sultan said strengthening early childhood intervention would help ensure children receive appropriate support regardless of their background or abilities.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Brunei’s education system and improve teaching and learning.

Education Beyond Academic Skills

The Sultan also emphasised the broader role of educators in supporting children and young people.

He said teachers are responsible not only for developing students’ knowledge and technological skills, but also for shaping their character, morals and values.

He called on the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs to work together to strengthen the curriculum, including the development of moral values and the principles of Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) from primary school.

Supporting Teachers and Quality Education

The Sultan also highlighted the importance of teacher wellbeing, saying the Government would continue addressing educators’ workloads and teaching challenges.

He urged the Ministry of Education to strengthen the management of relief teachers to support teachers’ welfare while maintaining the quality of teaching and learning.

The focus on both children and educators reflects the wider theme of this year’s Teachers’ Day, “Guru: Pemangkin Pendidikan Lestari dan Inovasi” or “Teachers: Catalyst for Sustainable Education and Innovation”, which recognises teachers’ role in building a quality, sustainable and relevant education system.

The Sultan also congratulated Brunei’s teachers following the country’s reported performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025. Brunei recorded improvements across science, mathematics and reading, while more than 70% of students achieved performance levels above expectations in computational problem-solving.

He expressed appreciation for teachers’ dedication and sacrifices in educating and guiding the country’s future generations.
