Sunway University Launches New Early Childhood Programmes With Stronger Focus On Inclusion | KiddyNews

Sunway University has introduced three new Early Childhood Education (ECE) programmes, strengthening pathways for professionals to support children’s diverse learning and developmental needs.

The programmes were highlighted during a recent launch attended by Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek, who stressed the importance of quality early childhood education and ensuring that no child is left behind.

The initiative comes as the importance of the early years continues to gain attention, with more than 80% of a child’s brain development taking place before the age of five. These formative years lay important cognitive, emotional and social foundations that influence how children learn and engage with the world.

Putting Inclusion at the Centre

Among the three programmes is the Bachelor in Early Childhood Education with Special Needs (Honours), which brings together early childhood pedagogy, inclusive education and special needs support.

Its curriculum includes Universal Design for Learning, neurodiversity, assistive technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, inclusive classroom design and partnerships with families. Students will also gain professional experience in early childhood and inclusive settings.

The programme reflects the need for educators who can recognise different learning and developmental needs and create environments where every child has a meaningful opportunity to participate.

Fadhlina has also highlighted the importance of identifying developmental needs early and ensuring children receive appropriate support. She shared her personal experience as a mother and urged parents not to allow uncertainty or denial to delay intervention.

For children with different abilities, inclusion involves more than learning alongside their peers. It requires educators to understand that children may learn, communicate and respond to their surroundings in different ways, while creating environments where their strengths and needs are respected.

Three Pathways Into Early Childhood Education

The new programmes offered by Sunway University’s School of Education are:

Bachelor in Early Childhood Education with Special Needs (Honours) – conventional mode, September 2026 intake

Diploma in Early Childhood Education – conventional mode, September 2026 intake

Diploma in Early Childhood Education – Open and Distance Learning, January 2027 intake

Together, the programmes provide both diploma and degree pathways, with conventional and online options for those seeking to build a professional future in early childhood education.

Professor Malissa Maria Mahmud, Dean of the School of Education, said the programmes recognise that children’s learning and wellbeing are shaped across many settings, not only within classrooms.

Looking Beyond the Classroom

The programmes also support the School of Education’s Children Experience Economy initiative, which broadens the view of where early childhood expertise can contribute.

The initiative recognises that children’s experiences are shaped by the services they encounter, products they use and spaces where they learn, play, receive support and connect with others.

This wider landscape includes early learning and care, inclusive support and special needs, child development and wellbeing, learning design and educational content, family and community engagement, as well as children’s services and experience innovation.

For families, this broader perspective reinforces an important point: creating supportive environments for children is not the responsibility of educators alone. Schools, families, service providers and the wider community all play a role in ensuring children can participate, learn and feel that they belong.

With its new programmes, Sunway University aims to develop professionals with strong educational foundations, a commitment to inclusion and a wider understanding of the experiences and systems that shape children’s lives.

As Prof Datuk Dr Elizabeth Lee, chief executive officer of Sunway Education Group, wrote in The Star, building an inclusive society requires everyone – from policymakers and designers to employers and everyday citizens – to consider how the environments around children can better accommodate their needs.
