From First Beat to First Stage: Developing Children Through Music

by Billy Boey . on 08/09/2026 ...

A child’s first encounter with music can be wonderfully simple: a pair of hands clapping to a beat, little feet moving when a song begins, a voice joining a familiar melody, or the delight of discovering that tapping a surface can create a sound. Long before children learn musical notation, they are already responding to rhythm, repetition, melody and movement.

That instinctive response is part of what makes music so powerful. Across cultures and generations, music has helped people celebrate, communicate, tell stories and build a sense of belonging. It has crossed languages, carrying emotions that words sometimes cannot fully express. A rhythm can make people move together; a melody can evoke memory; a song can turn voices into one shared experience. For young children, it offers something equally valuable: a language through which they can explore the world and their place in it.

The First Beat that Sparks it All

Music gives children opportunities to listen, move, create and participate. It can give an expressive child a chance to shine while offering a quieter child space to find their voice. Through music, children are not only discovering sound, but also themselves and how to connect with others. This belief is central to First Tempo MM. This early childhood music education provider sees music as a tool for holistic development rather than simply a subject to be mastered.

For Karen Ng, founder of First Tempo MM, that journey begins with something deceptively simple: the first beat. “To catch the first beat is very important,” she says. The first beat becomes a fitting metaphor for early childhood, a beginning from which children learn to listen, respond, participate and find their rhythm.

Established in 2011, First Tempo has since partnered with more than 120 preschools, kindergartens and childcare centres across East and West Malaysia and Vietnam. Through its ModernMusic Mastery Method, music becomes more than a subject to learn, serving instead as a vehicle for nurturing confidence, creativity, coordination, communication, teamwork and wider social-emotional growth.

When Music Becomes a Learning Journey

ModernMusic Mastery Method comprises of eight learning capsules:

Rhythm & Percussion Skills
Listening & Ear Training
Vocal Development
Keyboard Appreciation
Creative Thinking
Music Drama & Expression
Movement & Dance
Music Literacy & Theory.

Each element can contribute to a different part of the child’s learning journey; a child keeping a beat is developing timing and coordination. Listening closely trains attention and musical awareness. Singing encourages vocal confidence and expression. Keyboard activities introduce children to musical structure, while creative thinking gives them opportunities to make choices and experiment. Drama and movement allow children to communicate with their bodies, build physical awareness and participate with others. Even music theory becomes more meaningful when children experience concepts through active learning.

This is reflected in First Tempo’s four educational pillars: Music Movement, Music Awareness, World Music and Music Affirmation. The intention is to help children grow academically, socially and emotionally, rather than simply memorise songs. Movement supports physical and cognitive development; musical awareness builds understanding; exposure to world music encourages appreciation of different cultures; and positive affirmation helps children become more comfortable expressing themselves.

It is an approach that recognises an important truth about early childhood: children learn with their whole selves.

Making Music Relevant to Children

For Karen, relevance matters. “We are on contemporary music,” she explains, describing First Tempo’s preference for music that children can connect with while still drawing from a wider musical heritage. Classical music has its place, but the programme makes musical experiences accessible through contemporary, popular and varied influences.

That philosophy also shapes the curriculum itself. First Tempo develops proprietary lesson modules, tailor-made compositions and copyrighted teaching materials, while continuously refining its programmes in response to educational trends and global musical influences. Digital academic reports are provided every eight weeks, giving schools a structured way to follow children’s learning.

Behind the system, however, is a human element. First Tempo’s trainers bring the programme into classrooms, working directly with children rather than leaving music education as a set of materials on a shelf. The organisation invests in trainer development and relies heavily on their aptitude, energy and ability to connect with individual school communities.

Furthermore, First Tempo provides ongoing trainer development, with training held twice a year to keep educators connected and learning together. It helps protect programme consistency while recognising that each classroom is different. The curriculum may provide structure, but it is the trainer who turns that structure into a living experience.

From Classroom to Stage

That relationship continues beyond weekly lessons. First Tempo supports schools during concert seasons, helping with performance planning, choreography, rehearsals, music arrangements and stage coordination. In this way, the journey does not end when a lesson finishes; classroom learning can gradually become a shared experience on stage.

For children, a concert is more than a performance. It is a chance to practise patience, remember sequences, work with friends, manage nerves and discover the feeling of accomplishing something together. For schools, First Tempo’s support also helps ease the considerable organisational demands of putting on a concert.

Karen has seen how performance culture can become part of a school’s identity. Older children learn how to behave on stage, and younger children watch and absorb those habits. “The culture that you cultivate, it will pass down from peers,” she says.

That observation reveals something deeper about First Tempo’s work. Music education does not happen in isolation. Children learn by watching one another, participating together and gradually becoming part of a community where performing, listening and supporting others feel natural.

And because First Tempo works across more than 120 schools, this experience is multiplied across different communities, classrooms and generations of young learners.

The Power of People

For an organisation with such a structured curriculum, Karen’s description of what keeps schools coming back is surprisingly simple: Friendship.

It speaks about the importance of relationships behind the programme. First Tempo’s trainers have become familiar faces within school communities, sometimes building relationships with schools over 10 or 12 years. When a trainer changes, First Tempo works with the school to manage the transition and rebuild that connection.

It is a reminder that consistency in early childhood education is not only found in curriculum documents. It is also found in trust, familiarity and the adults who make children feel comfortable enough to try.

From First Beat to First Stage

Ultimately, First Tempo is not trying to make every child a professional musician. Its larger ambition is to give children a meaningful first relationship with music and through it, opportunities to listen carefully, move confidently, think creatively, communicate clearly and participate with others.

The first beat may be tiny: a tap of the hand, a step of the foot, a child finding the rhythm for the first time. But from that beat can grow a surprising range of experiences. A song can be discovered, a movement mastered, a friend encouraged, a new idea created, and eventually, a child standing on stage with the confidence to share what they have learned.

That is where First Tempo’s philosophy comes into focus; every child can be given opportunities to discover their own rhythm, their own voice and their place in the larger rhythm of the world.
