Education Minister Says Every Child Deserves a Safe and Quality Learning Environment

Creating safe, well-equipped and conducive learning environments will become one of the key priorities under Malaysia’s new school curriculum, which begins next year, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for SJKC Eco Grandeur on Aug 5, Fadhlina said every child deserves access to quality learning spaces, regardless of the type of school they attend.

“It doesn’t matter what school it is, the aspiration and desire is to provide the best for our children,” she said.

Learning Environment Recognised as Part of Quality Education

Fadhlina said one of the core elements of the new curriculum is ensuring that students learn in environments that are safe, comfortable and conducive to learning.

She added that the Ministry of Education continues to approve the construction of new schools each year to meet growing demand, particularly as the first cohort of six-year-olds enters Year One under the new education framework next year.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said 38 new schools have been approved in 2026, following 44 approvals in 2025 and 26 in 2024.

New School to Include Preschool Classrooms

The new SJKC Eco Grandeur in Selangor will be built on a 2.7-hectare site and will feature 24 primary classrooms and two preschool classrooms, with capacity for up to 960 pupils.

The school will also include a multipurpose hall with two indoor badminton courts, a covered basketball court, outdoor learning spaces, a field and a canteen.

To enhance safety, the campus will feature covered walkways, designated waiting areas, controlled access and a dedicated drop-off and traffic management system for students and families.

The RM18 million school, funded by developer Eco World before being handed over to the Ministry of Education, is expected to open in the second half of 2028, subject to construction progress.

A notable feature is its continuous ramp system connecting all four floors, providing step-free access throughout the building. According to the project announcement, this is the first design of its kind for a primary school in Asia.

Eco World Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said schools should be designed so every child feels welcomed and supported.

“Every child has potential. What they need is the opportunity and the right environment to realise it.”

Strong Foundations Begin with Quality Learning Spaces

While the new curriculum focuses on teaching and learning, the ministry’s emphasis on improving school environments reflects the understanding that children’s development is also shaped by the spaces where they learn.

Safe, accessible and well-designed classrooms can help create positive learning experiences from the preschool years onwards, supporting children’s confidence, wellbeing and readiness to learn.
