New Pathway to Help Kemas Children Transition Smoothly into Preschool and Primary School | KiddyNews

by on 09/06/2026 ...

Children enrolled in Kemas childcare centres and kindergartens could soon experience a smoother transition into preschool and primary school under a new collaboration between the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) and the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Deputy Prime Minister and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to create a more connected early childhood education pathway for young learners.

From Nursery to Primary School

Under the initiative, children attending Kemas nurseries and kindergartens from the ages of two, three and four will learn through a curriculum aligned with that of the Education Ministry.

Zahid said Kemas Tabika centres are being positioned as “feeder kindergartens” for preschools in national schools, helping children move more seamlessly through the education system.

According to the proposed pathway, children will transition into preschool at national schools at age five before continuing to Year One at age six.

Building a More Connected Early Learning System

Zahid said the arrangement would create a more structured and integrated early childhood education ecosystem.

Under the model, education for children below five years old will remain under Kemas, while preschool education for five-year-olds will be managed by the Education Ministry before children enter primary school.

The move aims to provide greater continuity in learning during the critical early years of a child’s development.

Support for Educators and Learning Environments

Speaking earlier at the Kemas Educators’ Day celebration, Zahid also stressed the importance of supporting early childhood educators through lifelong learning opportunities, professional development and exposure to new teaching approaches.

He added that learning spaces should continue to be improved, noting that every child deserves a safe, conducive and enjoyable environment in which to learn, while educators should receive the support needed to carry out their role effectively.
