“We created this as an extension of their real-life experiences,” shares Ms. Jovy. “After children explore nature outdoors, light and shadow help them revisit what they saw and felt. But this time in a deeper, more expressive way.”
The journey begins outdoors, where children observe how sunlight filters through leaves and branches. They notice patterns, movement, and subtle changes in light throughout the day. These observations are then brought indoors into a carefully curated environment, where they experiment freely with light sources, objects, and materials.
“They begin to ask questions, why does the forest become darker after rain? Where does light come from? Why do shadows move? These are the beginnings of scientific thinking,” Ms. Jovy explains.
Through hands-on exploration, children engage in:
- Manipulating light, shadow, and reflection using mirrors, foil, and recycled materials
- Creating dynamic shadow patterns and observing how they change
- Exploring weather elements such as rain, sunlight, storms through both science and artistic expression
- Using shadow play to interpret movement, emotion, and storytelling

“Light and shadow are abstract, but through art, children can express what they have learned; how rain moves, how wind feels, how sunlight changes,” says Ms. Jovy. “It transforms observation into creativity.”
In this space, children become investigators. They control light, shape shadows, and form their own interpretations of the world, almost like young scientists and storytellers at once.
“Children can control light and shadow themselves, as if they are detectives and researchers discovering a world that is always changing.”
