Dr. Elsie Chin has a fiery passion for education. In 2001, she founded Cambridge English For Life (CEFL) in order to inspire a love of learning English across Malaysia. She is a teacher by training, one who looks past limitations to give students the knowledge and encouragement to learn anything, anytime and anywhere. She is also a savvy businesswoman who has built a network of over 60 CEFL centres. She believes that English can open the doors to success and aims to open as many doors as possible.
For CEFL, learning English is more than just scoring good grades in exams. They have helped both children and adult learners build up the confidence to communicate in English. CEFL offers qualifications for personal and professional purposes. They help learners climb the ladder of success from Junior English learners who are learning their first words, step by step and class through class to a level that equals that of native speakers.
Learn Quickly, With Natural Ease
Today, CEFL continues to use the communicative method to teach learners to think and express themselves in English. Their classes provide a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Lessons combine all aspects of English language skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Course materials consist of engaging texts and captivating activities to help learners improve and master the language skills. The CEFL education experience is not only about having learners acquire English by reciting memorised words or scripts, it is all about making learning enjoyable, rewarding and effective.
With CEFL, learners are inspired to go further. The courses are also designed to cultivate a list of critical 21st century skills: collaboration and teamwork, creativity and imagination, critical thinking, and problem solving. Teachers in CEFL are highly-qualified, experienced and dedicated. They use various different strategies and teaching approaches to support learning. No two classes are similar. Teachers take into account what motivates learners when planning their lessons. Resources and activities are always well-organized and set imaginatively to match the interests and needs of all learners. In a setting like this, staying motivated has never been easier.
Together We Learn Better
The learning experience at CEFL benefits all children. It supports and addresses the individual needs of every child, including learners with special needs. A great example features a unique student enrolled at CEFL Kajang Metro Centre. She is a student coping with cerebral palsy. While she may have struggled with acceptance elsewhere, CEFL stands true to their standpoint of finding a way for every learner, every step of the way. CEFL welcomed her with open arms, gave her an opportunity to learn and develop meaningful friendships, and helped make her vision come true. More importantly, this inclusive learning environment prepares children for life in a diverse society. It encourages the awareness of showing respect, having better appreciation for individual differences and being rooted with genuine empathy. It is a great story as well as a great illustration of what education should be about.
Mandarin For Life
The CEFL group continues to develop new programmes to meet the needs of a changing world. It has recently launched a new programme called Mandarin For Life. It is Malaysia's first introduction to a play-based approach to teaching Mandarin Chinese, or Standard Chinese, coined "learn through play and play to learn". The course is catered to non-native Chinese speakers aged between 4 to 12 years. Skilled teachers carefully and deliberately plan games, songs, role-plays and other interactive activities to help students learn Mandarin in a way that is meaningful and enjoyable to them.
