Language is the expression of ideas and thoughts by means of speech. Sounds are combined into words. Words are combined into sentences. And sentences give birth to expressions and understanding and brings comprehension. As international boundries become blurred, the term ‘global citizen’ has come to describe a growing majority of the populace. With the English Language being very much the language of choice internationally, many parents have started to send their children to English Learning centres such as Morris Allen English.
Morris Allen English (MAE) has been in Malaysia since 2008 and is registered with the Ministry of Education as a language centre. Morris Allen English also has a footprint in the Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang with another centre on the way in My Town, Cheras.
Besides being your children’s English Language development partner, MAE will do all they can to ensure that over the course of your child’s stay with them that he / she will develop greater motivation, increased confidence and grow into balanced and well-rounded individuals.
“How will they achieve this?” you will ask.
With meticulously structured lesson content and clearly defined goals for every stage from Nursery children right up to Form 5 teenagers.
The fundamental skills needed for linguistic development are listening, speaking, reading and writing. At MAE, the syllabus also includes critical thinking as an essential skill to help the children achieve the next level of excellence.
By listening to interesting stories and videos, children learn how to perform well in aural discrimination, listening comprehension and following directions.
Speaking with confidence is nurtured to give children the opportunity to improve their English oral skills in order to do well in everyday conversations, oral examinations and book reports.
Exciting and contemporary reading materials are utilized to stimulate children’s interest in reading and supplement their general knowledge (think National Geographic and Harry Potter!)
Students learn the tools needed to write creatively as well as to construct interesting and thought provoking compositions. They are also taught the fundamentals of summary writing.
Creative and problem-solving activities are included to develop the child’s critical thinking skills and information literacy.
There is an English proverb that goes “Clothes do not make the man”. And realizing that their comprehensive curriculum and excellent programmes will all come to naught without the appropriate human capital, MAE has staffed their centres with qualified, highly experienced and dedicated expatriate English-speaking teachers. All its teachers are specialists with a strong sense of dedication and passion, with most of the educators holding BAs in Education, Linguistics or Literature. Classes are kept small so that teachers are able to focus on each child individually and also provide extra attention to those who seem to be lagging behind.
As a language, English cannot be studied like any other subject. To learn a language effectively, students need to learn in an interactive way where there is spoken communication between them and an accurate speaker of the language. Through the years, MAE has developed its very own Morris Allen Method for teaching English. It is known as The Interactive Multi-Sensory Learning System, a breakthrough approach in helping to make learning English fun and effective.
In any aspect of education, be it academic, linguistic or otherwise, the family unit is a crucial component of the learning process. Teachers can only do so much for the students in class. The eventual outcome will ultimately rest with the cooperation, participation and encouragement the child gets from the family. To foster and encourage such ties and interaction MAE organizes Parents-Teachers meetings and encourages book reports assignments. MAE also offer short courses on phonics, creative writing, headstart, comprehension, speech and drama and vocabulary and grammar.
MAE is constantly evolving and updating its huge collection of excellent resources and stimulating environment. And this has led to them being as relevant today as they were nine years ago.
As MAE’s General Manager in Malaysia, Ms. Angeline Teoh so aptly sums it up, “One of the most fulfilling things in my career is seeing how our students have grown with MAE: How they have improved in their command of English but most importantly how they have grown to be happy and confident individuals."
